Today, we are visiting Nepal's most mysterious underground cave temple, dedicated to God Shiva. This is not just a normal cave—it is one of the longest caves in Nepal, spanning over 3,000 meters. Inside, we can also see an amazing Swayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva Linga.
Historians believe this ancient cave is over 5,000 years old!
But here’s the interesting part—back in the 16th century, a group of local men noticed something strange. There was a patch of grass covering what didn’t seem like normal ground. Curious, they cleared it, and to their surprise, they found the entrance to a hidden underground cave temple!
When they stepped inside, they were shocked. Ancient Vigrahas of Bhagawan Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Nageshwar, and Goddess Saraswati were right there in front of them, untouched for centuries!
As they explored further, they saw a waterfall flowing inside the cave! Later, they realized that this water was coming from what is now known as Davis Falls—a place with its own mystery!
And just when they thought they had seen it all, they found something even more unbelievable—a huge, ancient Shiva Lingam, hidden deep inside the cave!
So, in this video, let’s explore all these amazing discoveries together. Without wasting any time, let’s begin!
Here's Gupteshwar Mahadev Cave, also known locally as Bhalu Dulo. This main entrance, with the large brown arch, was built in 1991. To enter, we have to go down this spiral staircase. As we descend, look at the walls! We can see numerous carvings, like the story of Samudramanthan. The first thing we notice is a sacred cowshed, and inside, a 'muthi' of a sacred cow is visible. From here, we have to go deeper to see more amazing features.
The main cave is divided into two chambers. The second chamber is closed during the monsoon season to prevent people from encountering high water levels.
Some areas of the descent are very dark and narrow, but it's a thrilling experience.
Now, we have reached an ancient Shiva temple deep within the cave. Inside, there's an impressive, large Shivalinga, covered by a Naga Vigraha. In front of the temple, we can see Nandi Bhagawan. Surrounding the Shivalinga, there are various deities, including Goddess Adi Shakti or Durga Devi, Surya Bhagawan, and Ganesha Bhagawan. From the temple, the trail leads to the second part of the cave. This section is inaccessible during the monsoon season. The path becomes narrower compared to the previous section, and through a tunnel, we reach a large chamber where we can see ancient Vigrahas of different deities. Further ahead, a metal staircase leads down to an amazing waterfall. We have to be careful while descending, as the stairs are quite slippery. This is an unbelievable view. Locals say that the water simply disappears, and its destination remains unknown. We have noticed that the water from the waterfall disappears from here, possibly flowing underground. On the walls, we can see various ancient patterns. In some areas, the government has strengthened the roof and walls with concrete for safety. This is truly an unforgettable experience. If you're planning to visit Nepal, make sure not to miss this incredible place. Now, let's go see the other side of the waterfall, which is known as Devi's Fall.
Davis Falls, also known as Patale Chhango (meaning "Underworld Waterfall" in Nepali), is famous for its tragic history.
The waterfall got its English name from a tragic incident in 1961. On July 31, 1961, a Swiss couple was swimming in Pardi Khola, the river feeding the falls. Suddenly, a powerful surge of water—likely caused by the unexpected opening of Phewa Dam's floodgates—swept Mrs. Davis (or Davi) into the strong currents. She was pulled over the falls and disappeared into the deep below.
Despite rescue efforts, her body was found three days later, about a kilometer downstream in Phusre Khola. This tragic event forever changed the identity of Patale Chhango, giving it the name Davis Falls and highlighting the hidden power of its underground water system.
