The coronavirus crisis has shown how keenly Australians rely on digital infrastructure, according to NSW Chief Data Scientists Dr Ian Opperman.

There has been an unprecedented demand for digital services as more and more Australians access the internet from home.

According to figures published in the Australian Broadband Data Demand report, in the first week of May, downloads during the busy evening period increased by 14 per cent to 12.6 terabits per second compared to the last week of February.

“The infrastructure we have relied on absolutely the most is not roads, we still need roads of course, and it’s not even the infrastructure that we have with buildings, it is the digital infrastructure.

“Without the digital infrastructure, the NBN, the telecoms infrastructure, the 5G network, we could not have survived what we just went through, or it would have been a very different experience."
