Sony has been quietly building one of the largest digital preservation projects in gaming history — and now we finally get a glimpse inside. The PlayStation Studios Vault already holds 650 terabytes of priceless game builds, source code, concept art, and even cultural artifacts from across 30 years of PlayStation history.

Led by Garrett Fredley, Sony’s IP Preservation Team is archiving everything — from PS1 classics like Arc the Lad, to every customer-facing and internal build of PS5 games. That includes alpha, beta, debug, and milestone builds for every PlayStation Studios title.

The archive is stored across servers in Las Vegas and Liverpool, with over 200 million files already preserved. To speed up the process, Sony even uses a disc-reading robot named Vaultron to scan old media. But as game development grows more complex, challenges around storage, indexing, and future accessibility are becoming more critical.
