Clerodendron thomsoniae, the Bleeding Glory-Bower, is a rare houseplant with very strange flowers, showing strikingly two-coloured inflorescences, where the red flowers contrast sharply with the white calyx, and the very long stamens adding an even more exotic touch to an already spectacular flower display, bursting in colours from the dark green leaves in the background. This species, also known nowadays as Glory-Bower, Bleeding Heart Vine and Bagflower, was known as Beauty Bush in the 19th century, when it was a very popular houseplant, and you can easily tell why: just see how it looks. I fell in love with this species when I saw it at the Kew Gardens near London, several years ago, and I would have never expected to find it in a garden centre for sale; so I obviously took immediately the chance to purchase this gorgeous plant. Clerodendron thomsoniae is native to tropical West Africa, and the specific name "thomsoniae" honours the first late wife of Reverend William Cooper Thomson, missionary in Nigeria in the 19th century. The plant in the wild grows as a liana up to 4-6 metres tall, however, when kept as houseplant, is usually trimmed as a bush, and in a container the size is a lot smaller than in the wild. Being a tropical plant, it is frost tender and should not be kept at temperature lower than 10 degrees Celsius. It can grow outdoors only in USDA zones 9 and up, however if exposed to cold temperature (as long as not below 10 degrees Celsius), it will drop its leaves, that then will re-grow when the temperature gets warmer. The plant needs a lot of light, ideally direct sun, and moist but well drained soil. In addition to the beautiful small flowers, bright red, surrounded by the white ballon-like calyx, the plant foliage is also gorgeous in my opinion, with a dark green colour, and quite velvety when touched, adding the pleasure of a nice leaf texture to such an unusual and exotic flower display. Unfortunately the flowers are not fragrant, but I can easily forgive this to such a showstopper plant!!!
