What happens when a country like China has you in its economic crosshairs? This episode focuses on how Lithuania and Taiwan responded to China’s economic pressure.

Lithuania may have felt China’s economic retaliation after opening the Taiwan Office in Vilnius, but that did not deter the nation’s leadership. China banned the import of all goods from Lithuania and imposed sanctions on some European goods that used Lithuanian components. Lithuania responded by reinforcing its relationship with Taiwan in technology, business, and culture.

In Taiwan, locals show their appreciation for Lithuania’s support by opening a Lithuanian-themed bar and purchasing Lithuanian products. Beyond buying products and opening businesses, there are more technical exchanges happening. The production of semiconductor chips requires advanced technology, including lasers, and Lithuanian lasers are on the cutting edge of that technology, being exported worldwide. Meanwhile, in Lithuania, joint food ventures in bubble tea and vertical farming further strengthen the ties between the two nations.

Beyond food diplomacy and semiconductors, there is much more expertise and experience that Taiwan can offer. Deepening this friendship with Lithuania is one way to bring Taiwanese skills and assets to the rest of the world.


Taiwan’s Little Big Friend

Taiwan’s Little Big Friend is a mini-documentary series exploring the diplomatic, economic, and social relationship between Taiwan and Lithuania. In 2021, Lithuania opened the Taiwanese Representative Office in Vilnius, the first of its kind worldwide, leading to economic retaliation from the Chinese government, which banned the import of Lithuanian goods to China. This three-part series documents the relationship between the two countries and how Lithuania became Taiwan’s little big friend.
