Asinara. When we read about this protected island, there was no doubt: we had to visit this place during our holiday to Sardinia! Not only because of the adorable, cute albino donkeys, but also due to its history and beautiful nature. So we booked a guided trip with Asinara4x4 and admired - and learned about - the island. In this video, we'll take you to this island and its past!

Asinara National Park is a 52km2 island with quite some history.
Around 1885 the island turned into the Italian Alcatraz. The 500 inhabitants - shepherds and fishermen, were forced to leave the island.
During the first world war, it was a quarantine station and a prison.
It became a maximum-security prison in 1970, for terrorists and mafia bosses like Totò Riina.

Sardinia closed the prison in 1997 and established the island as a National Park. The island is protected now, and only has one resident. With a flora of 678 species, Asinara is a unique place to visit.
The name ‘Asinara’ is Italian for 'donkey-inhabited'. Most of the donkey population on the island is wholly or partly albinistic.

This cinematic travel video is entirely shot by the DJI Osmo Pocket in 4K.
