The sky was clear over the Atlantic. An E-2C Hawkeye thundered toward USS Eisenhower on final approach.

It was routine. The kind of landing Navy pilots perform through muscle memory.

Line up with the glowing guide light, follow the hand signals of the landing officer on deck, lower the tailhook, and aim to catch one of the four thick steel cables stretched across the flight deck.

Hook the cable, and the aircraft goes from 150 miles per hour to zero in under two seconds. Brutal. Controlled. Perfect.

But not this time.
The tailhook hit the cable.
But there was no jolt. No deceleration.
Just a snap, loud and wrong.
On deck, people screamed.
One sailor turned just in time to see a massive steel cable whipping toward him…
