The love of Allah (maḥabbatullāh) is one of the most important themes in the Qur’an. Allah describes His love for certain people and their qualities, and also calls the believers to love Him above all else. Here are some key verses from the Qur’an about the love of Allah:
Allah loves the righteous (muttaqīn):
“Yes, whoever fulfills his pledge and fears Allah – then indeed, Allah loves those who fear Him.”
Qur’an 3:76
Allah loves those who rely upon Him (tawakkul):
“Indeed, Allah loves those who rely upon Him.”
Qur’an 3:159
Allah loves those who repent (tawwābīn) and purify themselves:
“Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.”
Qur’an 2:222
Allah loves the doers of good (muḥsinīn):
“And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.”
Qur’an 2:195
The believers love Allah most:
“But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah.”
Qur’an 2:165
Following the Prophet ﷺ brings Allah’s love:
“Say, [O Muhammad], ‘If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.’”
Qur’an 3:31
Allah loves His servants more than a mother loves her child
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Allah is more merciful to His servants than a mother is to her child.”
— Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
The sweetness of faith is loving Allah most
The Prophet ﷺ said:
*“Whoever has three qualities will taste the sweetness of faith:
1. That Allah and His Messenger are more beloved to him than anything else,
2. That he loves another person only for the sake of Allah,
3. That he hates to return to disbelief after Allah has saved him from it, just as he hates to be thrown into the Fire.”*
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
Allah loves certain deeds and people
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The most beloved of deeds to Allah are those that are most consistent, even if they are small.”
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
And he ﷺ said:
“The most beloved people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to others.”
al-Mu‘jam al-Awsaṭ (Ṭabarānī), ḥasan
Nearness to Allah through extra acts of love
In a Hadith Qudsi, Allah says:
“My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more beloved to Me than the obligations I have enjoined upon him. And My servant continues to draw near to Me with extra acts (nafl) until I love him. When I love him, I become his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees, his hand with which he grasps, and his foot with which he walks. If he asks Me, I will surely give him, and if he seeks refuge in Me, I will surely protect him.”
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī
Signs of Allah’s love
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When Allah loves a servant, He calls Jibrīl (Gabriel) and says: ‘I love so-and-so, so love him.’ Then Jibrīl loves him, and announces to the inhabitants of heaven: ‘Allah loves so-and-so, so love him.’ Then the inhabitants of heaven love him, and acceptance is placed for him on earth.”
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
