Jack and Nicole both joined Northern through our Year-In-Industry scheme while studying at university. Jack was studying Geography and found rail to be a great fit, while Nicole was studying Psychology and had the opportunity to work closely with our Crime Reduction team. Their experiences show just how broad the railway really is, and how many different degree backgrounds can lead to meaningful roles in rail.

In this video, they talk about what it was like to take a placement year in the railway, the skills and confidence they gained, and how the experience helped them understand what working life is really like. They also share how their perception of rail changed once they joined, and why the industry turned out to be such a good place to kick start a career.

After completing their Year-In-Industry placements, both Jack and Nicole returned to university to finish their degrees and have since come back to Northern on our Graduate Scheme.
