Keir Starmer’s Labour Party are heading towards a humiliating defeat in the upcoming Hartlepool by-election according to a recent poll. The Survation poll shows the Conservatives to be seven points ahead of Labour, who have held the seat since 1959. Jill Mortimer is standing for the Tories against Dr Paul Williams for Labour.

In 2019 Mike Hill won the seat for Labour however he has since resigned after facing a parliamentary inquiry into his behaviour. In the 2019 general election, The Brexit Party came third in Hartlepool with 25% of the vote. The renamed Reform Party are now looking to take the seat, though recent polling shows the party to be struggling in the seat.

The by-election is being seen by many as a key test for Sir Keir Starmer, who is struggling to make an impact in opinion polls against Boris Johnson. Starmer has faced criticism from some in his own party in recent weeks over his leadership during the coronavirus pandemic. In the 2019 election, under Jeremy Corbyn, Labour suffered its worst defeat since 1935.

Boris Johnson’s strategy appealed to old Labour voters, as his party took dozens of seats from Labour known as the Red Wall. The Hartlepool by-election could see another so-called Red Wall seat fall to the Conservatives, which would represent a major boost to the prime minister’s position.
