The human skeleton performs six major functions; support, movement, protection, production of blood cells, storage of minerals, and endocrine regulation.
Our bones give us structure. For example, without the structure of our bones, our lungs would collapse.
Our bones work with the muscular system to help us move.
The skeleton helps to protect our vital internal organs from being damaged.

The skull protects the brain
The vertebrae protect the spinal cord.
The rib cage, protect the lungs, heart and major blood vessels.

Cancellous bone - the spongy bone that stores the red bone marrow; where blood cells are made.
Compact bone – hard, dense bone. It gives strength to the hollow part of the bone.
Periosteum – a protective layer where there is no hyaline cartilage. Ligaments and tendons attach to the periosteum.
marrow cavity - contains the yellow bone marrow; where white blood cells are made.
