For the first time in 99 years, Kong Meng San monastery -- one of Singapore's largest -- has closed its doors to its columbariums and ancestral halls. The move is in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and comes just before its busiest time of year, the Qing Ming festival. Over 250,000 visitors typically turn up from end-March to mid-April to pay respects to their ancestors. This year, they will not be able to then go into the columbariums and ancestral halls to visit their ancestor's niche. The monastery has also cancelled a mass ritual involving 8,000 sign-ups. Instead, the prayers will be streamed live online.
