Terrestrial and Aquatic Ecosystem

A. WHAT IS TERRESTRIAL ECOSYSTEM: Community of an organism and their environment occurring on lands masses of continents and islands.

B. 2 components:
Abiotic: water vapor ;temperature,soil,sunlight,nutrients,gases
Biotic: plants,animals,fishes

C. Characteristics: low availability of water; greater temperature fluctuations; greater light availability ;more transparent atmosphere; availability of gases.

D. What is a Food chain: (The Energy transferring process)
Definition: The process where the primary producer like sun source to produce food and generate energy which is eaten by grasshoppers (the primary consumers) are then eaten by animals like snakes (the secondary consumers) are eaten by animals like hawk and which are after death eaten by fungi following a decomposing process thereby bringing essential nutrients in the soil for the primary producers to carry over the chain.

E. Food Chain in a forest: Green plants eaten by rabbits /goats
Rabbits/goats eaten by Wolfs/wild cats
Wild cats/Wolfs eaten by Lions
(One animal becomes a prey for another)
(Called as a Food web)
F. Two categories Terrestrial Ecosystem:
1. Grazing :starts from living green plants
2. Detritus: starts from dead organic matter
(Both supports each other)

G. Aquatic Ecosystem:
Comprising of water having both Biotic and Abiotic (Plants;animals;corals;Gasses;Other substances)
Characteristics of Aquatic system: covers 2/3 of the surface of the earth

H. Two category: Salt water ecosystem (lot of salt content)
Fresh water ecosystem (less salty)
Aquatic food chain: Primary producers are eaten by (large plants plus small plants) consumed by primary consumers (small or microscopic insects) consumed by secondary consumers (very small fish) further eaten by territory consumers eaten by Quaternary consumers (sharks /large sized fishes).
