Morocco is Germany's primary hydrogen cooperation Partner, Christoph Rauh, Head of Directorate Africa at Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), has told Morocco World News (MWN).

"Morocco is our main partner, the main partner of Germany, when it comes to cooperation and build up a hydrogen industry," Rauh said today on the sidelines of the World Power-to-X Summit, noting the significant German presence of private investors and government officials.

Rauh stressed Germany's approach of public-private coordination in hydrogen development. "Our philosophy is, of course, to accompany from the public sector what is happening and what will happen in the area of private investments. We work hand in hand, and Morocco is our main partner on the African continent," he stated, expressing hope that Morocco will become a major hydrogen supplier to Germany and Europe.

Beyond the political alliance signed last year, Germany is working through implementing agencies GIZ and KfW to support Morocco's hydrogen sector.

"Through our GIZ, we work closely together with Moroccan authorities like MASEN to establish the right framework conditions, to develop standards in Morocco, to make it possible to develop this industry here," Rauh explained, pointing out the importance of learning exchanges across African countries.

Germany's ambitious climate neutrality goal by 2045 drives the partnership urgency. "To be climate neutral means that we have to substitute a lot of fossil energy supplies through things like hydrogen. We know in Germany that we highly depend on imports which must come from countries like Morocco," Rauh said, adding that "it must be a win-win solution for Morocco and for Germany."
