(24 Sep 1976) The President of Liberia, William Tolbert jnr told a joint meeting of the United States Congress on Thursday (September 23) that Africans will fight to "the last drop of blood" to win majority rule in Rhodesia. Tolbert, whose country was founded in 1847 by repatriated slaves, urged congress to repeal the Bird amendment under which the United States has been importing chrome from Rhodesia in defiance of the United Nations embargo
