Nigel Kneale’s "1984" is a television adaptation of George Orwell's classic dystopian novel, and remains one of the most controversial and influential TV broadcasts in British history.
Set in the totalitarian future of Airstrip One (formerly Britain), the story follows Winston Smith, a low-level worker at the Ministry of Truth. He secretly resists the oppressive regime of Big Brother, keeping a forbidden diary and beginning a love affair with Julia, a fellow rebel.But as their defiance grows, they are caught in the iron grip of The Party, leading to torture, re-education, and the infamous Room 101, where Winston confronts his worst fears.

Nigel Kneale’s script was praised for its faithful and emotionally powerful adaptation of Orwell’s work. Working with director Rudolph Cartier, they made full use of live TV techniques, shadowy sets, and sound design to capture Orwell’s grim atmosphere.

Kneale’s 1984 is considered a milestone in British television drama, influencing future TV sci-fi and dystopias — including Black Mirror, Threads, and his own Quatermass serials.
