A customer of HSBC has been the latest victim of a sophisticated scam sweeping through the United Kingdom.

Lesley Thompson, who runs a children’s nursery in North Yorkshire, fell victim to theft. Ms Thompson, 51, was told she was eligible for a grant to go towards her nursery in May 2017.

Excited at the prospect of having extra funds to put towards a small farm for the children of her nursery, Ms Thompson accepted when the scammers asked her to put 30% of the total amount into the account, as an investment that she would use the money wisely.
