A condom is the only contraceptive method that not only prevents unwanted pregnancy but also protects against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like HIV/AIDS. This makes condoms very important for anyone who is sexually active. They protect both partners and help in maintaining sexual health.
Many people think condoms are needed only for vaginal sex. This is not true. Condoms must also be used during anal sex to prevent STIs. They should also be used during oral sex. That is why flavoured condoms are available in the market. These are specially made to make oral sex safer and more comfortable.
Condoms are made from different materials. Most condoms are made from latex, which is a type of natural rubber. There are also non-latex options available for people who are allergic to latex. Every condom has an expiry date printed on the packet. It is very important to check this date before use. An expired condom can tear easily and may not give proper protection.

After use, condoms must be disposed of properly. Tie the open end and throw the used condom in a dustbin. Do not flush it in the toilet. Flushing can block pipes and also harm the environment.
There are many interesting and lesser-known facts about condoms. Flavoured condoms come in different varieties like chocolate, strawberry, mint and bubble-gum. Glow-in-the-dark condoms are also available for people who like something fun and different. Latex condoms are made from natural rubber taken from rubber trees. Vegan condoms are also available in the market. These do not contain any animal products and are suitable for people who follow a vegan lifestyle.
The future of condoms is becoming more innovative. Colour-changing condoms are being developed. These may change colour if they detect an STI. Self-lubricating condoms can activate lubrication automatically when used. Scientists are also researching graphene condoms. Graphene is a very thin and strong material, which can make condoms stronger and more comfortable. Custom-fit condoms are available to give better comfort and safety.
Some smart condoms are also being developed. These can track temperature, pressure and duration. Digital condoms may provide information about sexual health and performance. One example is a smart condom called Camdom. It uses Bluetooth technology to block cameras and microphones nearby, helping to prevent non-consensual recording.
Over the years, condoms have played a major role in reducing the spread of HIV around the world. They are simple, affordable and easily available. Most importantly, they save lives.
