Suvaris Atheron, in particular, remembers how he defended her against two prejudicial Nords that were giving her a hard time. And since it's strategically important to gain support from highly respected Nords as well, he also manages to gain Brunwulf Free-Winter's support by expressing views about the social issues in Windhelm that match his own. The moral of the story is that common people are inclined to support those who reinforces their own beliefs, even if they are potential enemies.
