Today we look at when to pick pears in our allotment gardening for beginners video. Knowing when to pick pears can be tricky as they do not get ripe on the tree. If you wait for ripe pears before picking them then you will find they drop to the floor before you pick them.

As pears ripen off the tree we need to know when they are ready to pick. The best way that we have found is to try to pick one or two and if they are coming off easily then they are ready to pick. A clue to them being ready to pick and ripen is that they may drop from the tree. We had found that some had fallen from the tree today before we picked them. The dropped fruit can be eaten if then condition is good. They may have bruised so using these plus and other damaged fruit first is a good idea. They will need to be cooked if they are not ripe so pie or puree is good. They can easily be frozen when cooked if you wanted to save them for another day.

The un ripe pears will be stored at home in a cool place away from vermin. A tray with a sheet of paper on it works well. They will ripen over the next few days and weeks this way so we avoid stacking them on top of each other so that we can keep an eye on them and remove any that start to rot.

Pears that are not ripe can be cooked instead of waiting for them to ripen. Damaged pears can be cut up to remove the unwanted parts. These can then be cooked with a little sugar to make a puree or compot.
