Alexander Everett Ross was the only son in a family of ten children and, from an early age, became his father’s principal helper. His childhood was marked by tragedy when his father died while Alex was just fourteen years old. Forced to assume greater responsibility within the household, he nonetheless distinguished himself as a gifted student, athlete, and musician. By the age of twenty, Ross had already completed a successful internship at the MacDonald law firm in Edmonton, Alberta, and earned a teaching certificate. He hoped to use this qualification to support himself financially while pursuing formal studies in law. Despite this promising future, he chose instead to enlist for active service.

He initially joined the 194th Battalion (Edmonton Highlanders) and was later transferred to the 49th Battalion (Edmonton Regiment) in March 1917. Ross fought at Vimy Ridge and later took part in the Avion Raid that June, where he was wounded in the leg and evacuated for medical treatment. After his recovery, he returned to the Western Front following Passchendaele and served continuously with "D" Company until he was mortally wounded on 14 August 1918 during the fighting at Parvillers.

Well liked by all who knew him, Ross was remembered with affection by his comrades. In August 2025, the grandson of one of his friends and fellow soldiers visited Ross’s grave to pay respects and tribute to his grandfather's fallen comrade.

Alexander Everett Ross était le seul fils d’une famille de dix enfants et, dès son plus jeune âge, devint le principal soutien de son père. Son enfance fut marquée par la tragédie lorsque son père décéda alors qu’Alex n’avait que quatorze ans. Contraint d’assumer de plus grandes responsabilités au sein du foyer, il parvint néanmoins à se distinguer comme un élève brillant, un athlète accompli et un musicien talentueux.

À l’âge de vingt ans, Ross avait déjà effectué avec succès un stage au cabinet d’avocats MacDonald à Edmonton, en Alberta, et obtenu un brevet d’enseignement. Il espérait utiliser cette qualification afin d’assurer son soutien financier tout en poursuivant des études formelles en droit. Malgré cet avenir prometteur, il choisit plutôt de s’enrôler pour le service actif.

Il s’engagea d’abord au sein du 194e Bataillon (Edmonton Highlanders), puis fut transféré au 49e Bataillon (Edmonton Regiment) en mars 1917. Ross combattit à la crête de Vimy et participa par la suite au raid d’Avion en juin, au cours duquel il fut blessé à la jambe et évacué pour recevoir des soins médicaux. Après sa convalescence, il retourna sur le front occidental après Passchendaele et servit sans interruption au sein de la compagnie D jusqu’à ce qu’il soit mortellement blessé le 14 août 1918 lors des combats à Parvillers.

Apprécié de tous ceux qui le connaissaient, Ross resta dans la mémoire de ses camarades avec affection. En août 2025, le petit-fils de l’un de ses amis et compagnons d’armes se rendit sur la tombe de Ross afin de rendre hommage et de témoigner son respect au camarade tombé de son grand-père.
