Fredegund: Merovingian Queen and Ruthless Power Player

Fredegund (c. 545–597) rose from low birth, likely a slave or servant, to become the queen consort of King Chilperich I of Neustria around 567. Initially his concubine, she became his principal wife after the suspicious death of his first queen, Galswintha, whom many sources imply Fredegund arranged to be murdered, sparking a bitter and violent feud between Fredegund and her rival Brunhild, queen of Austrasia.

Her reign was marked by ruthless political maneuvering and a series of assassinations and attempted murders, targeting opponents including Brunhild herself, Chilperich’s family members, and political rivals. While not all attributed murders can be conclusively proven, contemporary chronicler Gregory of Tours portrays Fredegund as a cunning, implacable, and often cruel figure who used violence and intrigue to maintain power.

Despite various setbacks, including being temporarily sidelined after Chilperich’s death in 584, she regained influence as regent for her young son Chlothar II. The rivalry with Brunhild shaped decades of Frankish politics, warfare, and shifting alliances, culminating in Fredegund’s forces defeating Brunhild’s faction in battles leading near Paris.

Fredegund died of the plague in 597 but left a legacy of political strength and a dynastic foundation through her son Chlothar II, who eventually reunited the Frankish kingdoms. Her life story reflects the brutal and intricate power struggles of early medieval Europe and has fascinated historians as a dramatic embodiment of ambition and survival.
