Lake Rerewhakaaitu is a small, shallow lake in northern New Zealand, located 30 kilometers to the east of Rotorua. It is immediately south of the active volcano Mount Tarawera, and the geography was substantially altered by the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera. Camping, picnicking, swimming, and boating are all popular recreational activities at Lake Rerewhakaaitu Recreational Reserve. Lake Rerewhakaaitu lies at the base of the southern slopes of Mount Tarawera and, due to the eruption in 1886 of this maunga, the land surrounding the lake is rich with volcanic soils. A significant site for wildlife, the lake supports breeding populations of native waterfowl such as dabchicks, scaup, and the district’s largest breeding population of the banded dotterel. Despite being relatively shallow, Rerewhakaaitu is usually beautifully clear. It is surrounded by farmland, and native manuka grows around the edges. Fires are not permitted in this area. Mobile phone coverage is intermittent. Please take care of the environment and dispose of all rubbish responsibly. Guy Roe Reserve Guy Roe Reserve is the first recreational area you come to along Brett Road and a popular spot for picnicking, fishing, and boating. Facilities include a children's playground, barbecues, picnic tables, toilet facilities, jetty, and boat ramp. The walkway and the bush area are administered by the Department of Conservation (DOC). Are dogs allowed? Yes, dogs on leads are permitted. Please dispose of dog waste responsibly. Brett Road Campsite Further up, Brett Road is Brett Road Campsite in Awaatua Bay. Twenty-five non-powered campsites are located along the shore of Lake Rerewhakaaitu and enjoy good swimming, walking, and fishing. Online bookings are recommended, and waive the booking service fee. Facilities include a shelter for cooking, non-flush toilets, un-treated tap water, and boat ramp. Are dogs allowed? No, dogs are not allowed in areas administered by DOC in the Rotorua area. Ash Pit Road Campsite Continuing north along Brett Road to Ash Pit Road, at the northern-most point of the lake, you’ll find Ash Pit Road Campsite, which offers the same provisions as Brett Road Campsite, however, here there are 51 non-powered sites.
