Steve Vai (Long Island, NY, June 6, 1960) and raised in Carle Place, NY was a pupil of Joe Satriani as a teenager and studied at The Berklee School of Music (his father sold his life insurance policy to pay for the tuition. Vai graduated from Berklee in 1979) before moving to Los Angeles at age 19. He was a huge fan of Frank Zappa's and joined Zappa's band in 1980, after proving that he knew most of the repertoire and could transcribe orchestral pieces by ear. Zappa often credited Steve on albums as "stunt guitarist". Vai is a respected apiarist who gives talks to schoolchildren about beekeeping. He has described his hobby as a "full-blown obsession".

Rarely has one of Frank Zappa's sidemen been so gracefully and directly been immortalized in a song. Steve Vai was a young guitar virtuoso when he joined the band in December 1980. This story, yet another installment in Zappa's chronicle of "life on the road," is related to the guitarist's hotel room experiments with Laurel Fishman, a groupie and acquaintance of the band since the early days of the Mothers of Invention. The girl was into weird vaginal insertions and other strange sexual practices (a subject the composer especially liked) and that's what the lyrics to "Stevie's Spanking" are telling.
