Value stocks refers to stocks of companies that are considered cheap relative to their long-term earnings and growth potential, usually with stable business models that focus on the fundamentals. Value investing focuses on identifying and buying stocks that are trading lower than their actual “fundamental” value.

This approach requires a contrarian mindset and a long term investment horizon.
It could also be said that value investing typically underperforms throughout a market cycle but is known for its odd patch in the sun, as we have seen recently.

Growth stocks refers to companies that are expected to grow faster than the rest of their industry sector or the market as a whole and have above-average long-term revenue and/or earning potential.

As growing the business is a priority, these companies usually reinvest their earnings in order to expand quickly often at the cost of delaying profitability.

So how have the two investment styles fared recently?

In 2020 alone, the MSCI World Growth Index outperformed the MSCI World Value Index by 34.6%.
As we spoke about last week, much of this performance was driven by US mega-cap technology stocks – namely Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Neftlix, Alphabet (formerly Google) and Microsoft. These stocks have been able to deliver real, structural earnings growth in a low-growth world.
