In this video, Dr. Mark Mason, a board-certified plastic surgeon with 20 years of experience, discusses when a person should consider changing their breast implants.

Breast implants will need to be exchanged at some point. According to an FDA study*, approximately 20% of breast augmentation patients need some type of additional procedure. However, if you are not experiencing any issues and you are still happy with how things look, there may not be any need for exchanging your implants.

One reason for needing to exchange your breast implants is a capsular contraction. Capsular contraction is the formation of a "capsule" of scar tissue around any kind of implant (medical or cosmetic) and is a normal part of the healing process. The capsule also assists in keeping the implant in place. There are occasions where the capsule will begin the harden and shrink around the implant. This can cause the implant to lose its shape and pain in the breast.

Another reason to exchange your implants may be due to a leak in the implant. With saline implants, the fluid will be absorbed by the body leaving just the shell of the implant. If a leak develops in a silicone implant it is not absorbed by the body. Instead, it stays in place due to its cohesive properties until the implant can be changed.

Many times, a patient just might not be as happy with their implants later in life. They may want a different size, or perhaps just a lift to achieve the perky shape they had when they were younger.
