As Renewable Generation replaces conventional electricity sources, maintaining grid stability becomes harder due to reduced reactive power, inertia, and short circuit level from traditional synchronous generators. Grid operators are exploring solutions, including synchronous condensers. Synchronous condensers, also known as synchronous compensators, are not new. Widely installed in the mid-20th century at power stations and substations, they fell out of use with the advent of larger generating turbines and power electronics like Static VAr Compensators (SVCs) and STATCOMs, which are cheaper to operate and replaced synchronous condensers in electricity networks.
