Thanks to ‪@HoughtonHorns‬ for sponsoring this video and providing a Verus Chicago Double Horn to try out!

This etude is based off of the glockenspiel solo from Mozart's opera "Die Zauberflöte." As such, the melody should always be light and playful.

You may be tempted to over-accentuate the staccatos throughout this etude. The sound still must ring after the clear articulation, even if the note is "short."

If the judges choose a cut for your region that includes two or more sections of the etude, you should use the double bar as an opportunity to finish the phrase, catch your breath, and reset for the new section.

When you play a theme and variations, you should strive to have as much of the phrasing and character of the original theme present obviously throughout each variation.

You can only play this etude at whatever tempo you can play the final variation. Be careful of starting too fast and being unable to control the 16th notes.

If you choose to double-tongue the final variation, you must practice your
double-tonguing every day at a slow tempo to achieve a clean and clear
articulation. However, I find it easiest to mix both single and double-tonguing throughout to maximize clarity of articulation and
efficient tone production.
