A piece for full orchestra documenting a man telling a story to someone as they sit near a riverbank (perchance).
LORE
This piece is one I've been working on for perhaps a month (at least since before the weird choir thing I made for the last video). I pictured a man sitting on a riverbank, telling stories to a friend (or a child, or something). The specific details of the storyteller and listener aren't very fleshed out, so feel free to come up with your own interpretations :)
I pictured the first recorder section as setting the scene for the river. The following string section could be something akin to the person asking the man to tell them a story. The ensuing choral and brass sections are the man "setting the scene" for the past. Perhaps he starts a bit abstract and impersonal, but the next section, with the English horn melody, introduces his theme; he becomes more personal.
The next section sees the man's theme return once more, but I pictured it to be a bit more innocent, which I interpret as the man telling of his childhood. Then, a low brass/string interlude appears with the "conflict" theme. Perhaps this is a physical antagonist, or maybe it's an inner demon the man faced.
The rapid wind section following that is what I pictured as a "storm." This could be a real storm or a metaphorical one. That section is then interrupted by a calm, chorale-style (probably) rendition of the antagonist theme. I'm not sure exactly what this represents, however.
The final section has the man recount his overcoming of the conflict, starting with his theme, transitioning into the conflict theme (with his theme overlaid), and concluding with a thickly orchestrated/triumphant rendition of his theme.
The piece ends with the riverside theme again, as I envisioned us returning to the present. I think it feels a bit more reflective, so perhaps this represents the listener pondering what the man told them.
That's pretty much what I was going for, so I hope it's conveyed well in the music! There are a lot of themes in a relatively short timeframe, so it probably feels a little quick/rushed at times, but that's due to my lack of planning and mostly just winging it. Also, I kind of wanted to move on to different projects. I want to do more planning for projects in the future, so they feel less rambly---something like writing a story beforehand and really taking my time with individual musical ideas. I think limiting the scope of things would help, too (for shorter pieces like this).
