Chasing the Sun is a series of prints and animations that uses code to randomly remix extinct plants and sustainable homes by women architects. The project uses time zones as a conceptual framework to contrast geological time with contemporary timekeeping systems that are often skewed by politics (i.e. Franco changed Spain’s time zone to align with Germany in the early 20th century). This single-channel version is divided into 24 vertical stripes for 24 time zones.

Examples of compelling home-plant pairings include Bettina Mehnert’s Volcano house, an off-grid house on the Big Island of Hawai’i, blending contemporary Hawaiian architecture with sustainable design, mixed with a flowering plant, the Hibiscadelphus woodii, endemic to Kauai. Once thought to be extinct, Hibiscadelphus woodii was rediscovered in 2019 by a drone where it was growing out of the steep, vertical face of a cliff. It echoes the artists’ interest in using tech to solve problems created by tech.

Chasing the Sun was conceived in 2017 during a Fulbright in Germany, Chile, and China. Still a work-in-progress, the project would not be possible without Sophia Mundy as muse, Owen Mundy for his creation of the browser extension to generate images and collaboration on the animation, Sarah May and Matthew Clay-Robinson for their willingness to exhibit early versions, and studio assistants Evie Mulhern and Abigail Matthews for their research and renderings. 2025 iterations include sound by Charles Nichols. Many institutions supported this project including the NEA, MacDowell, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the Knight Foundation, North Carolina Arts Council, NC Arts and Science Council, the European Cultural Centre during the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale, and Davidson College.
