By contrast, these solvents are essential to the application and curing of most antifoul paints, many of which contain up to 45% VOCs.

These solvents pose a fundamental problem. They’re major contributors to climate change. Consequently, regulations are moving towards a stringent reduction of VOC content, to the point of complete elimination.

Coppercoat contains just one biocide. The naturally occurring element of pure copper.

By contrast, traditional anti-fouls work by releasing a toxic cocktail of biocides (the “active substances”), designed to tackle the entire spectrum of slime, weed, and shell fouling, which love to cling to hulls.

Again, regulators are moving in to limit the damage. Within Europe, over the last few years, the choice of active substances available to manufacturers has been reduced from over 50 to less than 15.

Proposed legislation may restrict each anti-foul product to a single active substance from this list – a possible regulation to which Coppercoat already complies.

The copper used in Coppercoat is recycled from copper wires. We use no freshly mined copper, meaning less damage to the Earth, and less risk to humans. (Remember the miners trapped in that copper mine in Chile a few years ago?)

Coppercoat has an incredibly low leach-rate, meaning that when compared to conventional anti-foul paints, it causes less damage to the environment and provides a longer lifespan.

The speed at which biocide is released (the leach-rate) is under scrutiny by regulators. For example, California and Sweden have set legal limits at just 9 micrograms per square centimetre per day – a figure way below most currently produced traditional anti-foul paints. But Coppercoat hugely undercuts this, having a minimal leach-rate of just 1.4 micrograms per square centimetre per day.

Coppercoat’s low leach-rate also contributes to its longevity; a single application of Coppercoat typically lasts for between 10 to 20 years.

Coppercoat has minimal “end-of-life” issues.

When a re-application is eventually due, it is made directly to the old coating, with no end-of-life contamination. In contrast, “spent” layers of traditional anti-foul paints (still containing biocides) must to blasted or scrapped off every few years and disposed of.
