The heat of the afternoon clung to our skin as we walked in silence along a dried-up riverbed in the heart of Zambia, each step sinking softly into the warm sand. A perfectly preserved lion track caught our eye, stamped deep into the fine grains—a fresh reminder that we were not alone. Wildlife surrounded us in every direction: a small herd of zebra paused mid-graze to study us, elephants moved unhurriedly through the trees, and kudu slipped ghost-like between the acacias. The air carried the thick, unmistakable scent of wild animals and sun-baked earth. We walked with only one guide at the front and a tracker behind, the latter resting a steady hand on the worn stock of his rifle. Every so often he kicked at the sand to check the wind direction, making sure our presence stayed undetected by anything we might stumble upon. Immersed in the rawness of the African bush, every sound, movement, and shifting breeze heightened our senses—a safari experienced not from the back of a vehicle, but with the land beneath our feet and wilderness pressing close on all sides.
