How did I become a patient advocate? How did I get started? What kind of work do I do? How can others get started too?
In this video I share my story and experiences as a patient advocate and the work I do, and share some tups and advice for how you can get involved too.
Patient advocacy comes in many forms. It can be patient involvement, patient leadership, lived experience leadership, service user involvement, rare disease advocacy, patient engagement, coproduction and many other forms of advocacy exist, as well as the broad category of patient advocacy on a whole — patient advocacy can be for one condition in particular, a group of conditions, particular needs and/or complications, people depending on different treatments and interventions, people cared for under particular services, people working with different organisations including the health system, pharma, charities, social enterprises, businesses and community groups, and so much more. It can involve attending meetings, speaking at conferences and events, attending demonstrations, campaigning, digital activism, media appearances (formal media and online video, podcasts, etc.), creating content for online, blogging, writing articles, getting involved in research, strategic level work, running charities and community or support groups, and so much more.
Don’t underestimate what you can do — your lived experience is valued, wanted, and your unique contribution to the world is needed.
Do you have any questions? Would you like to ask me anything? Maybe you’re a patient advocate and want to share what you do? What is your biggest achievement as a patient advocate?
