Saving the knowledge: "Punk Records" is the physical, massive brain of the genius scientist Dr. Vegapunk, which stores all of his immense knowledge and memories. Edison, one of Vegapunk's six satellites, moved it to prevent it from falling into the hands of the World Government.
Foiling York's plan: Another satellite, York, had betrayed Vegapunk and aligned with the World Government to become the sole Vegapunk. She intended to hand over Punk Records to the government. Edison anticipated this and used the island cloud-generating "Cloud Plant" to make the Records float away into the sky, out of her reach and the government's grasp.
Preserving the Satellites' consciousnesses: After several other satellites (Shaka, Pythagoras, and Atlas) were seemingly destroyed, their consciousnesses were able to be preserved within the floating Punk Records. Edison later merged their minds into a rebuilt, single body, ensuring their survival.
