In this first part of the day, he focuses on the problem of “Getting to Yes” with yourself. He discusses how we can negotiate “from the perspective of the balcony” in order to keep sight of our own best interests in a negotiation, and how to identify and focus on the best alternative to a negotiated agreement or “BATNA”.
