Pashupatinath Temple is one of the most revered Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, located on the banks of the Bagmati River in Kathmandu, Nepal. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a major pilgrimage destination for Hindus, drawing thousands of devotees and tourists annually. The temple's history dates back to 400 AD, making it one of the oldest and most sacred temples in the region.
The main temple is built in a pagoda-style architecture with intricately carved wooden rafters and four silver-plated doors, symbolizing Nepal’s rich artistic heritage. The temple houses a unique and sacred Shivalinga (a symbol of Lord Shiva), which has four faces representing different aspects of Shiva. Non-Hindus are not allowed inside the main temple complex, but they can view the temple from the nearby hill.
Pashupatinath is also known for its ghats (steps leading down to the river), where cremation ceremonies take place, following Hindu customs. The temple is especially vibrant during the Maha Shivaratri festival, when thousands of sadhus (Hindu holy men), pilgrims, and devotees gather to offer prayers.
