Today in the shop I am restoring a mechanical splitting axe for a friend of mine. This mechanical axe, The Great Divider, was designed and built in the 70's, and produced through the 80's. This short term of production makes it a bit more rare than its mechanical axe cousin, the Chopper 1, but it works just the same.

I strip it down to its parts and clean everything of its rust. Then I ground and sharpened both blades, before painting all the parts. I put the head back together and then moved onto the handle. I fit and hung the head with a walnut wedge, and painted the end of the handle with measured stripes to add a bit of visual interest to the handle that matched the look of the head.

I put the Great Divider to the test, splitting some big rounds of wood, and it worked great. This was the first time that I have used a mechanical axe, and it was impressive to say the least.
