Modulate to any key you want: Gateway Chords

Описание к видео Modulate to any key you want: Gateway Chords

This exercise is from a method book by Felix Horetzky, who was a student of Mauro Giuliani. It contains studies and exercises for modulation. This exercise shows you in a practical and quick way how to modulate from C major to other keys: A minor, F Major, G Major, D Minor and E Minor.

It's done by using what I like to call a Gateway Chord, which is the dominant chord of the key you want to move to. For example, the gateway chord from C Major to change to A Minor is E7, the dominant of A Minor.

Here are all the formulas done in this short video. The chords marked with * indicate the gateway chords:
C Major - E7* - A Minor
C Major - A Minor - C7* - F Major
C Major - A Minor - D7* - G Major
C Major - G7 - A7* - D minor
C Major - A Minor - B7* - Em

Using this simple technique allows you to move to any key you desire at any time. Composers like Bach, Sor, Tarrega, Barrios, Mertz, Giuliani, Carcassi, Tedesco - just about all of them - use this technique frequently.

Changing keys results in a change of mood/character, giving a storytelling dimension to the music. When you're aware of these changes, you can bring out the flavor of each new key change.

We're covering modulation in depth this month on CCG. You can join the live sessions, or take the Lite membership and watch recordings of our theory workshops, where concepts like this are explained clearly through slides, examples, demonstrations, exercises, analysis and short tasks.
