Today we enjoy a guided tour of a small museum dedicated to the Chemins de fer économiques des Charentes, located in Gourville, a small village near Rouillac.

Open during the summer and school holidays at select times, the museum has an eclectic collection of artifacts from the short-lived narrow-gauge lines that traversed the Charente region in the early 20th century.

The construction of this rail network is primarily due to the initiatives of Adrien Paul Mairat, a Charente Councilman and important journalist for whom the line was named. During a time of rapidly-changing technology, Mairat argued for the funding of the project.

As noted in the video about Rouillac, the line was the target of allied aviation during World War 2. With the arrival of the combustion engine and a better road network, it was scrapped by the end of the 1940s. However, many vestiges and artifacts can be found throughout the region today.
