The “Singapura Medley” is a medley of four Malay songs about Singapore. This piece is arranged to prominently feature the various rhythms of Malay folk music that will be played by the rebana.

Set to the slow asli rhythm, the firt song in this piece is “Di Tanjong Katong” (At Tanjong Katong), a well-beloved folk song composed by Ahmad Patek, brother of Osman Ahmad who was a prominent composer at Shaw Brothers Malay Film Productions studio. The recurring chorus of “Di Tanjong Katong” refers to the beautiful historical Tanjong Katong beach in Singapore, which had long been gone due to land reclamation.

“Orang Singapura” (Person of Singapore) was composed by the renowned Pak Zubir Said and tells of the qualities that one should have as a Singaporean, such as being kind, respectful, hardworking, responsible and faithful. In this arrangement, the song is set to the walking-like inang rhythm, alternating with an upbeat joget rhythm for its chorus.

Next comes “Singapura Bandaraya Cantik” (The Beautiful City of Singapore), composed by Abdul Rahman, a Singaporean composer in the 1950s. This song describes the beauty of the Singapore landscape at night with its city lights. In this piece, the song is given a glimmering introduction, which then transits into a march-like style upon the lively canggung rhythm.

The final song presented in this medley is “Zapin Telok Blangah”, composed by the award-winning Singaporean singer-composer Tun Zubir Abdullah. “Zapin Telok Blangah” is an ethno-pop song well-recognized by the Malay community, not only in Singapore but also within the neighbouring regions. The song is about the traditional Zapin Telok Blangah dance and alludes to its relation with the historical Telok Blangah, which is the district between Pasir Panjang and Tanjong Pagar in Singapore. This song is arranged first in its original dance style, that is the rhythmic zapin, and then ending off with the canggung.
