Liner Notes: I've always loved this song, and have performed it from time to time over the years. It was originally performed (and presumably written) by the Edge, and appeared in the movie (and on the album) "Rattle and Hum." I'll confess to not being aware until recently that Van Diemen's Land is the old name for Tasmania, which was used as a prison for the British. According to this link (http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?i... John Bender's recollection in the comments section), it was inspired by the true story of John Boyle O'Reilly, an Irish Fenian leader in the mid 1800's who was banished to the penal colony (but apparently ended up in Western Australia instead of Tasmania). Happily, he escaped and lived out his days in the U.S. and became a newspaper editor and beloved poet. The lyrics have always been stirring to me, but I never realized they were based on one specific person who was unjustly sent half way across the world for standing up to tyrannical circumstances.

I've heard excellent live versions of this song from that time period (circa 1987), where the Edge plays it in G, but I opted to use the tuning on the album (a half step flat, so in G flat). The album version fades out, so I used the ending the Edge used live (with that lovely deceptive cadence before the final line).
