Otto Frank, the father of Anne Frank, survived the Holocaust and dedicated the rest of his life to preserving his daughter’s memory. Born in Frankfurt, Otto was a decorated WWI veteran who fled with his family to Amsterdam in 1933. He hoped the Netherlands would be safe from the rising tide of antisemitism. But in 1940, Nazi Germany invaded the country, and the Frank family was once again under Nazi rule. In July 1942, the Franks went into hiding in the Secret Annex. For over two years, Otto lived there with his wife Edith, daughters Anne and Margot, and four others. After their betrayal in August 1944, they were arrested and deported. Otto was the only one of the eight to survive. His wife Edith died of starvation in Auschwitz. Anne and Margot perished in Bergen-Belsen.
After the war, Otto returned to Amsterdam. He discovered Anne’s diary, preserved by Miep Gies, one of their helpers. He worked tirelessly to have it published. First released in 1947, The Diary of a Young Girl would go on to be translated into more than 70 languages. In 1960, the Secret Annex became the Anne Frank House—a powerful symbol of memory, education, and the fight against intolerance. Otto’s mission did not end with the diary. He founded the Anne Frank Foundation and traveled widely, speaking about the dangers of discrimination, hatred, and indifference. Despite losing his entire family, Otto Frank turned grief into legacy. His story is not only one of survival but also of resilience, remembrance, and hope.
