Why Are Two-Thirds of Tropical Forests Still Standing?

Описание к видео Why Are Two-Thirds of Tropical Forests Still Standing?

What’s been key to protecting the two-thirds of tropical forests that are still standing?

Factors like political will, economic conditions, and governance can be hard to measure with traditional methods. To dive deeper, researchers at the Conservation Research Institute conducted a Delphi study with 36 experts to uncover what they believe has contributed to forest protection in the Brazilian Amazon and Indonesia. The speakers' findings reveal the complex factors at play in both regions, showing how political will, civil society advocacy, and international cooperation all make a difference.

In this seminar, we’ll discuss these insights and bring in experiences from other forest-rich countries to help us understand what’s been effective in protecting forests.

The panel discussion features Matthew Spencer, CCI 2023 Turner Fellow and Global Director of Landscapes at IDH, in conversation with Rachael Garrett, Director of the University of Cambridge's Conservation Research Institute, and Dr. Joss Lyons-White, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Conservation Research Institute, University of Cambridge.

Recorded on 20 November 2024.
