If you are a teacher or professor, it might be natural for you to create a compelling course for your students at school. But have you ever thought specifically what the most important steps are when you start creating a great course, a course that is not just informative to your students, but is also highly enjoyable to yourself?

Today I’m going to talk about the 4 essential steps when you just start to create your online course.

Step #1 Do your research

There is so much information online, and so many options for online courses. As an educator, you might have been used to creating content based on the curriculum required by your state or school district. There might be strict guidelines on what you need to teach and even how to teach.

However, to create an online course for the public, you need to do a thorough research on what the market wants, and what people are searching for. You want the course to be informative & instructive, to be the best for your students, and to be valuable to share with the world.

Step #2 Find your own strength & passion

Although it’s super important to find out what course topics the market wants, it’s equally important to pay attention to yourself, making sure the course you are going to create and sell will fit your own expertise, your interest and passion.

You don’t want to create and sell a course just for money. You want to build a career that is based on your own strength, and that you can enjoy for a long time, maybe even for your whole life ahead. Needless to say, you want to create a course that you are truly passionate about. You want to switch the mode from “working” to “living” and “loving”, and make it a fun and pleasant career that you are so happy to jump into every morning.

#3 Create your roadmaps

I have had the experience many times in life finding myself buried in millions of tasks and couldn’t decide which one I should work on first. It has been super helpful to me to use roadmaps, no matter if it's setting goals to achieve, or creating course content.

I use roadmaps for my annual goals, monthly goals, weekly goals, and daily goals. For instance, every morning I would draw a very simple roadmap, and add the tasks to each step based on the priority and urgency. I try my best to set a time limit for each task, although it doesn’t always work like magic! Sometimes you have to adjust your plan, and make changes to your roadmap.

I also use roadmaps to structure my course, to arrange a variety of modules and lessons, or to map out and choose the most engaging and personal approaches for my course delivery methods.

#4 Life-long learning & practicing

My husband, Rick, is a big basketball fan. Actually he was an excellent basketball player in high school. Last week, there was a huge upset in NACC tournament, that the #15 St. Peter Peacocks beat the #2 UK Wildcats. After the game, Rick commented on UK’s loss, telling me that the Wildcats took for granted that they would win, as they were tall, strong and highly ranked, and the team was the betting favorite to win. However, the other team knew how to play! They didn’t depend on height or physical strength, but they were smart and well-trained, and they used their skills earned from hard-core daily practice to make every shot count. They perfected their basketball skills by practicing hard.

That reminds me how we, as educators, can perfect our teaching skills by continuous learning and practicing. For instance, you must be good at teaching in the classroom, but you may not be an expert in teaching through videos, which is almost essential for teaching online now. With consistent and continuous practice, you will get used to talking in front of the camera. You will learn the skills, and will become highly effective and comfortable at what you do.

These are the 4 essential steps I believe are very important when you just start creating a course online. It seems unreal, but with your careful planning & preparation, you can soon share your talent, your knowledge and experience with the whole world!
