At the beginning of this year, my very first YouTube video was all about lighting my smoker for the first time. It was snowy, I didn’t even have bees yet, but I was so excited to start beekeeping that I documented every step.

Now that I’ve gained experience lighting and maintaining a smoker throughout the season, I’m revisiting the topic — and this time, I’ve found my new favorite smoker fuel: pine wood pellets.

They’re super affordable — a 50-pound bag costs around $5 — and they last forever! I used them during my hive consolidation last week and didn’t have to tend to my smoker a single time. It kept a steady, cool smoke going the whole time, and there were even unused pellets left after I snuffed it out.

⚠️ I’ll add that you should make sure that your wood pellets don’t contain any chemicals or binding agents that could harm your bees. Mine were 100% wood where the process of pressing them bound the bits together without chemicals.
