Enjoy Eshaan M.'s review of All Hail the Popcorn King. As a Texan, I'm proud to say that we have created an incredible, definitive identity for ourselves across the US and internationally: we’re the home of cowboys, as the site of a major revolution in American history, and as the home of Tex-Mex, among others. The Lone Star State is known for many things. However, what you might not know is that Texas is home to many talented authors, including the prolific genre fiction writer and ten-time Bram Stoker award-winner Joe R. Lansdale. And that, or rather he, is what the film All Hail the Popcorn King is all about.

“Only our memories allow that some people ever existed. That they mattered or mattered too much," Joe R. Lansdale wrote in one of his more than 50 novels, 400 short stories, and countless comic books and screenplays. His friends and mentees alike recognize that Lansdale is no regular storyteller: "He knew you couldn't skin a rabbit and keep it as a pet." He inspired a generation of suspense writers. Documentary filmmaker Hansi Oppenheimer took it upon herself to create a detailed and immersive film documenting his life story, especially his unique vision and how his surroundings in his hometown of Nacogdoches, Texas, have influenced him.

The production quality of All Hail the Popcorn King is quite good and offers a refreshing change from traditionally shot documentaries. There are colorful frames and borders at some points, and the film feels relaxed and informal as the camera moves between interviews of Lansdale’s friends, those of other authors influenced by him, and of course, of Lansdale himself. Interspersed are archival photos and one-on-one “walks” with Lansdale around Nacogdoches, both of which give the documentary a decidedly human touch. It’s a beautiful documentary that doesn’t feel so formal but is well-put-together and displays a cohesive package.

All Hail the Popcorn King is a great film that emphasizes staying true to your roots, finding your fountain of inspiration, discovering more about yourself through your passion, as well as creating beautiful pieces of work for the world to enjoy and having fun while making them.
