The Canon XA60: an Everyday Camera for Filmmakers

You may have seen my vlogs about the Canon XA50 a few years ago. It is no secret how much I love that camera for run & gun documentary filmmaking. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford the XA50 back then and have been since then continuing my search for the perfect camera to make documentaries with. This past week, I rented the Canon XA60 from LensRentals.com to try out. If it's anything like its predecessor + even more better upgrades, it would be the camera for documentary filmmaking in 2024. Here are my thoughts after having used it a few times to film my first batch footage.

I'll try to test the XA60 a few more times before having to return it to Lensrentals.com. So far, it is quite an upgrade from the XA50. The LCD screen is so much bigger and clearer than on the XA50. For someone who is visual like me, that is a huge bonus already!

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THE CANON XA60:

1/2.3" CMOS Sensor (same as the Canon XA50 and G50)
4K Recording (same as the Canon XA50 and G50)
Built-in 20x Optical Zoom Lens
USB-C Output (upgrade)
Optical Image Stabilization
Better & larger 3.5" Touchscreen LCD (upgrade)
Record 4K in XF-AVC and MP4
Dual SD
Dual XLR Audio Input hence you can make professional videos/films with the appropriate mics (same as the Canon XA50)
Built-in ND filter (totally built-in & automatic at your choosing, unlike the XA50 which gives you an option to add ND filter whenever you want)

I DON'T LOVE:

The menu is still befuddled and hard to get to. I'm not a huge fan of having to dive into menu options. And when I do, I want them to be as visual and intuitive as possible. This ... Canon has not quite mastered.

When filming in darker situations, the autofocus is terrible. Unfortunately. The camera is not made for filming in the dark unless you can add additional light to your film sets.

Autofocus is not reliable 100% of the time. I don't remember having this issue with the XA50 as much. But then that was almost 3-5 years ago that I used it.
