The India–European Union Free Trade Agreement could start delivering tangible benefits from 2027, once the ratification process is completed, according to Adam Burakowski, former Ambassador of Poland to India and Professor of Political Studies at the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Burakowski said the long-negotiated deal, concluded in January 2026, is now entering the legal and ratification phase in both India and the EU. He noted that while full implementation will take a few years, the first tariff reductions could begin in 2027, provided the process stays on track.

He described the agreement as one with global economic implications, bringing two of the world’s largest markets closer and potentially reshaping supply chains, transport routes, and global trade flows. Increased maritime trade between India and Europe is also expected.

On Poland–India ties, Burakowski said the FTA will automatically strengthen bilateral trade, as Poland is an EU member. He highlighted the steady rise in trade volumes, estimated at around USD 7 billion, and expressed hope it could grow to USD 10 billion annually with the agreement in place. He also underlined the strong political and strategic partnership between the two democratic nations.

The India–EU FTA, he said, sends a wider message about cooperation among major democracies and could influence the broader global trade architecture.
