For 12 months, in the midst of an extremely hostile environment, the Red Cross Field Hospital in Rafah, Gaza has served as a beacon of care and hope.

Tens of thousands of people have entered through its front gate seeking treatment for a wide range of issues including injuries received because of the conflict, infections, and untreated non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and respiratory conditions.

Recently, there have been fewer patients arriving at the field hospital. This is not because fewer people need treatment but because of evacuation orders. People are repeatedly being told to move to other areas where access to healthcare is virtually non-existent. When people cannot access healthcare, preventable deaths occur.

The Canadian Red Cross, with the support of the Government of Canada and donors, continues to support the Red Cross Field Hospital with personnel and equipment.

Anastazia Rybak is a Canadian nurse who responded to the call to help. She deployed to Gaza twice to work alongside local colleagues at the field hospital.
