When Norway’s Elkem decided to build a new biocarbon pilot plant in Saguenay, Québec, it opened the door to a bright future for the local community and the planet. The new pilot plant will produce biocarbon briquettes—a renewable product designed to replace metallurgical coal, a major emitter of greenhouse gases.

The $26 million investment could not have come at a better time, as the region’s economy and job market were hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Saguenay’s skilled workforce and natural resources were a strong draw for Elkem. The plant now employs more than 100 local workers.

The investment is the result of years of R&D to create a biocarbon product from forestry waste for a more sustainable future. Studies have shown that biocarbon can outperform fossil coal in production, while also reducing carbon footprint.
